Robotics: How it Works

As many people know, robotics is used in various industries, from health care to manufacturing. But the question is: how are these robots able to perform these supposedly human-based tasks?

The answer is simple: these robots are programmed and implanted with artificial intelligence, or what we’ve known abbreviatedly as AI. This feature allows for continuous progression, expanding their limitations.


Take the Da Vinci Surgical System as an example. The robots themselves are not able to perform tasks; it is the AI implanted that helps to mimic an operating physician, transferring their skills to the robots. This essential feature is often used due to the long distance between the physician and the patient. Thanks to such invention, not only are procedures performed with greater precision but also without the physical presence of the operator. In addition, robots don’t need as much rest as humans do, which means more time to save even more patients!


Not only for surgical purposes, but the application of AI has also become even more widespread. You may already be utilizing such technology without realizing it! Voice assistants in smartphones such as Siri and Google Assistant, for instance, are programmed with AI to respond to our unpredicted questions. Facial recognition such as Face ID unlock feature is also able to differentiate various faces thanks to AI.


While this technology has minimized the possibility of human errors and made things more convenient and precise, there are still risks that come with such technology. Something might’ve gone off course during manufacturing or assembling or programming, prohibiting the robot from performing at its best ability and even making fatal mistakes.


However, this shouldn’t prevent less creation of usage of AI and robotics. Compared to those successful stories, the chances of fatal accidents are quite slim. With our world technologizing, demand for skills in robotics and AI is increasing. Efficiency in these fields allows for a potentially lucrative career. Plus, as mentioned, such technology has its pros of minimizing or even eliminating risks from human errors and increasing precision and hours of work. Fundamentally, while AI and robotics have their setbacks, it is still important to understand the basics of these fields because they are crucial in our technologizing world.
